With its success story in telecommunication services and business projects, MTN Rwanda is now planning to invest at least $20 million in its plan to move its business to more digital operations than just traditional phone calls.
MTN CEO, Ebenezer Asante says that they are doing this because Social Media is changing the world as more and more businesses rely on it. MTN is part of this new digital world and this will be a major 2014 plan that will see digital services reach all Rwandans even those with a simple mobile handset-
Asante made the remarks today February 4th while addressing an MTN media engagement forum at the MTN headquarters in Nyarutarama. The meeting was aimed at highlighting the 2013 achievements and future prospects of the company.
Asante stated that MTN has contributed Rwf 95 Billion over the last 5 years to the national development of Rwanda and 90% of revenue that MTN generates is retained in Rwanda.
He said that the total investment was Rwf 130 Billion and Rwf 468 million has been generated via MTN Foundation in the same period.
MTN has been recognized as the top brand in Rwanda in Social Media engagement, and has the widest distributor footprint & touch points – The company has expanded with now 17 Service Centres,44 Franchise Shops and130 Distributor shops.
Asante says that there is continued company growth despite competition & SIM registration challenges
Asante said that expanding 3G network remains a priority and MTN has the widest coverage and that MTN will continue to remain the leader with the 2014 rollout plan as it has the widest 2G and 3G coverage.
“A stronger fiber link is being constructed to reduce on the network downtime experienced in the past months. More 2G & 3G sites are being rolled out to improve coverage in Kigali & rural areas accompanied by over 80,000 direct and indirect employment in supporting local empowerment & job creation” he said.
More than 800,000 subscribers in Rwanda use MTN data and represents 13% of revenue as of 2013. MTN Rwanda was the 1st in MTN Group to use the new Mobile Money platform. Over 1 million subscribers use MTN Mobile Money says MTN Business General Manager and close to Rwf 100 billion was transacted via Mobile Money in 2013.
MTN Foundation has provided 15 schools with 540 computers with free broadband worth Rwf383 million, and MTN partnered with Imbuto Foundation to provide 100 students with education bursaries from S1-S6 worth Rwf90 million.
MTN Foundation has also brightened smiles by donating over Rwf33million for cleft lip operations under Operation Smile” said the head of the foundation, adding that MTN aims to build Rwanda’s human capital particularly in areas of technology, health & education.
On competition with other industry players, Asante made it clear that there was a major poor performance of the general industry and though the industry revenue declined by 20% in 2013, it doesn’t apply to MTN as an entity but to all telecoms since MTN still maintained value share of over 74% in 2013.
